The Story Behind The Stamps
The Tricentenary of the Great Fire of London St. Helena.
To commemorate the tricentenary of the arrival of settlers from London following the Great Fire of 1666 the St. Helena Post Office issued a set of four stamps depicting scenes of the migration:
1d City Scape of Burning buildings
3d East Indiaman Under Full Sail
6d Two Crowed long boats approaching the Shore
1/6 Group of People Felling Trees & Building Cabins
The Migration
Even though there are many conflicting reports about this event it is believed that the settles arrived on the East India Company Ship The Charles. The Company were struggling to find workers to populate the Island and seized on the opportunity to offer grants to settle families made homeless by the Great Fire.
